Maternity Photography Session & 4 Year Old Portrait Session in Our Costa Mesa Studio

AUDRA, GARY AND TYLER

This is one of my favorite family portraits. Audra had mentioned that she really wanted to get a picture with Tyler’s hands on her belly, so I thought it would be great to get the whole family into the shot. I absolutely love this photograph.

I like the lighting in this image. I used one medium soft box on a strobe placed at 45 degree angle to her, lighting her from behind. I had a gray backdrop behind her. I wish I would have used the black backdrop though to get rid of that gray behind her. Regardless of the backdrop I think this photo came out great.

This was a maternity portrait session, however Audra and Gary have been trying to bring Tyler in for the last couple years for child portraits and they hadn’t been able to make it in until now. I really wanted to spend a little of our time capturing a few images of Tyler. I wanted to make sure this time in his life, his precious childhood, was captured so they can remember it forever.

Tyler had a hard time focusing and looking at the camera as you can see in this shot. Both his parents were in the room during the photo shooot. Looking back, I should have asked them to leave the room so I could get him to just look at me instead of them. I still got some good images of him though and great ones of Audra. All of these photographs were taken in our Costa Mesa Photography Studio.

Three Month Old Baby Portraits in Our Costa Mesa Studio

PAIGE

This is sweet sweet Paige. We took these photographs in our Costa Mesa studio with a basic one light set up. I hung a dark gray backdrop and lit her using one medium soft box. For the first image I brought in a coffee table and covered it with pillows and a black sheet. I used the pillows so Paige would be comfortable and to help her not roll around. We also had towels and baby blankets on hand to help prop her up for some of the shots. I love how big her eyes are in the first shot.

For the feet, I had her dad hold them up with her laying on the table on her back. I love taking images of baby feet. It reminds me of when parents dip the first baby shoe in gold and put it on a plaque. Taking pictures of details like this help us to remember these precious times.

In this last image her father is holding her. Her mom was calling for her while standing over me and the camera. When photographing babies this young, I like to remember that they don’t know what they are looking at most of the time. They do however tend to recognize the shapes and sounds of their parents. For babies I almost always have the parents in the room to help me.

Fashion Photography Shoot in Our Costa Mesa Studio

FASHION PHOTOGRAPHY WITH JAMIE MICHELE

Jamie had mentioned that she wanted me to shoot something a little more edgy. So I went with high fashion look with harsh lighting like a spot light on a run way. I love the color of the jacket and the texture in the gloves. I think Jamie did a great job creating a soft look with the makeup to complement the high fashion lighting.

This was look two for this shoot. I wanted to shoot something playful and fun. I had this black frame in my office that I though would frame the model perfectly. I hung it from the ceiling with fishing wire – my best friend on set. I put a cyan backdrop behind the model and lit it with a strobe. I made a snoot out of blackwrap to give the strobe the bright spot in the middle behind her head. Jamie put bright red lipstick on the model to match the suspenders and to contrast with the blue background. I asked our model to play with the frame and you can see what came from that. I love that she’s not just framed in the picture, but actually coming through the picture.
